Native Seed Collection: The How, What and Where
There’s a growing demand for native seed, and vendors across the country are working hard to bolster the supply. For one company in Nebraska, that means hand collecting seed from wild populations on privately owned high-quality grassland remnants. It’s a seemingly simple strategy that comes with unique challenges: What species do we need to focus on? How many pounds should we target, and how do we do it sustainably? How do we develop relationships with private landowners so we can harvest seed from their grasslands? During this presentation, native seed technician Rita Cunha gives attendees a peek into the seed harvesting process — from the early planning stages to the work in the field and beyond.
