Not in My Front Yard: Green Street Rain Gardens, Aesthetics, and Social Values

September 14, 3:00pm • Rain gardens seem like a benign way to treat stormwater runoff. Yet, there can be public resistance when this type of green stormwater infrastructure is installed in the street right-of-way, and appearance seems to be a factor. This session presents feedback from city and county program managers and designers that have worked on green streets projects in residential neighborhoods (Kansas City being one). This feedback includes the components and qualities of the rain gardens that the public has responded favorably and unfavorably to, along with strategies for community engagement and maintenance.
